The Munxar Local Council has unanimously approved a motion to bring in a number of experts to examine the potential consequences of the proposed manure clamp.

Last August, The Malta Independent on Sunday reported last August how residents were up in arms that the plant, which is located on Triq Zghawri, will be used for the management and storage of manure, despite the detrimental effect it could have on the surrounding community.

In a statement, the councillors explained that truckloads of manure will start passing through the village square every day as there is only one road that leads to the site and will undoubtedly pose environmental and health risks to the community.

The motion, which was presented by PN councillors Damien Spiteri and Paul Chetcuti, also states that the experts must have no conflicts of interest, and will prepare a report that will be approved by the council.

The report will then be presented to the PA and other relevant authorities.

The motion also called on the Government, the Ministry for Gozo, the PS for Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry for the Environment to give the material the utmost importance and take any necessary action to safeguard the community and residents.
