Maundy Thursday - Mass of the Lord’s Supper with the washing of the feet

Thursday, 29 March 2018, 18:15 Last update: about 7 years ago

The Mass commemorating the Lord’s Last Supper starts towards sunset. The Church commemorates the Eucharist and the setting up of the priesthood.

The celebration has four sections: the liturgy of the word, the washing of the feet, the liturgy of the Eucharist and a procession to the place of adoration.

Today’s celebration is not the feat of the Eucharist, as this is celebrated on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus). Today’s event is a remembrance of the Last Supper in the contest of Easter.

The ceremony also includes the washing of the feet, a remembrance of the time when Jesus Christ washed the feet of his 12 Apostles. This year, Archbishop Mgr Charles Scicluna will be washing the feet of 12 young people who represent the Christian community.
