The government has set aside €10.5 million to be given to public workers who did not receive money owed to them in the past, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna and Minister for the Family, Children's Rights and Social Solidarity Michael Falzon announced at a press conference.

Describing the initiative as a ‘moral obligation’, Scicluna said that this is part of a continuous process to address a number of anomalies and past injustices, had allocated the sum of €8 million for the same initiative the previous year.

The measures will apply to three different categories:

- Those who worked in public bodies who worked in government departments before officially entering the public service after 16 January 1979, which involves around 2800 persons.

- Port workers (haddiema tax-xatt) who were licensed between 4 April 1973 and 1 June 2007, which includes around 600 persons.

- Police officials reimbursed for their overtime worked between September 1993 and 31 December 2009, which totals around 2440 officials.

Falzon explained that those who had already applied last year did not need to do so again this year, and will receive a letter from the ministry with their details.

He also said that the former workers of the Malta Electricity Board would also benefit from the scheme.
