Swedish federation official says Zlatan Ibrahimovic won't make international comeback

Thursday, 26 April 2018, 20:14 Last update: about 7 years ago

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not make a comeback for the World Cup, according to the sporting director of the Swedish Football Federation.

Lars Richt said in a statement Thursday that he spoke with Ibrahimovic two days ago and "he informed me that he hadn't changed his mind about the national side."

"Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not a candidate for the World Cup squad," Richt added.

Ibrahimovic retired from international soccer in 2016 after scoring a national record of 62 goals in 116 games. The striker, who recently joined the LA Galaxy, has hinted that he could make a return to the national team for the World Cup in Russia.

Earlier this month, the 36-year-old Swede wrote "sky-high" in Swedish on Twitter to describe his chances of playing at the World Cup.

Sweden coach Janne Andersson is expected to name his team on May 15.
