All local wardens to be transferred to LESA closed department as reform looms closer

Monday, 30 April 2018, 17:14 Last update: about 7 years ago

All local wardens will on Wednesday be transferred to a closed department of the Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA), the Justice Ministry said.

The move is part of the local wardens reform, which was a PL electoral pledge. Under the reform, local wardens will become known as Community Officers.

LESA was set up three years ago to oversee the reform, which will broaden the duties of local wardens.

There will be emphasis on the training of wardens, the ministry said, which will lead to greater but more sensible enforcement.

But wardens’ duties will not just be to dish out parking tickets. They will also take on environmental and educational roles.  The aim is to bring wardens closer to the community.
