A bus has caught fire near a petrol station in St Paul’s Bay, Malta Public Trasport said.

The fire completely destroyed the vehicle, but nobody was injured.

The fire has also caused damage to the facade of a car showroom nearby.

The MPT said that an emergency procedure was activated and the company's response team are on site offering all possible assistance to the relevant authorities.

While no one was injured in the incident, our priority at the moment is to ensure the well-being and safety of all those involved. As a precaution measure, the driver is being treated for shock, the MPT said.

In a second statement, MPT thanked the driver of the bus who immediately followed safety procedures and escorted the passengers to a safe distance, as well as the emergency officials who responded promptly and efficiently.

Malta Public Transport said it will continue to offer its full support and assistance to the competent authorities and will also be carrying out an independent investigation.

Transport Malta launches an investigation on bus fire accident

Following the accident, Transport Malta has launched an independent investigation.

The investigation will try to determine the cause of the accident and will help Transport Malta come up with recommendations to help avoid future similar accidents.

The Authority thanked the driver who, according to preliminary reports, acted swiftly and followed emergency procedures, thus avoiding further repercussions from the accident.  Transport Malta is glad that all passengers managed to alight the bus, before the fire spread, to avoid injuries.

Finally the Authority thanks the Civil Protection Department for their intervention and all those who have been somehow affected by the accident.
