Spanish La Liga: Lionel Messi gives 10-man Barcelona 2-2 draw with Real Madrid

Monday, 7 May 2018, 00:22 Last update: about 8 years ago

Lionel Messi helped 10-man Barcelona remain undefeated in the Spanish league after drawing 2-2 with Real Madrid on Sunday in a testy "clasico" match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo substituted at halftime with a leg injury.

Ronaldo hurt his lower right leg while canceling out Luis Suarez's opener in the 10th minute. He played on until halftime before he was replaced by Marco Asensio.

Madrid was dominating the match at Camp Nou when Barcelona right back Sergi Roberto was shown a direct red card in first-half injury time for swiping his hand at Marcelo's face as tempers flared.

But Messi came to the hosts' rescue, sending the ball past Keylor Navas in the 52nd to swing the match back in Barcelona's favor despite playing a man down.

Messi was stopped by goalkeeper Keylor Navas from scoring again and Gareth Bale pulled Madrid level in the 72nd after curling in a pass by Asensio.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said that he wasn't worried about Ronaldo being fit to play in the Champions League final against Liverpool on May 26.

"He doesn't feel good now, but I don't think it is anything serious," Zidane said. "We will have him ready (to play)."

Champion Barcelona stayed unbeaten through 35 league matches this season and extended its record run to 42 consecutive games without a loss. Its last defeat in La Liga was at Malaga in April 2017.

Barcelona has matches left against Villarreal, Levante and Real Sociedad to try and become the first team to go unbeaten in the competition since the 1930s, when it consisted of 10 teams compared to 20 now.

Barcelona clinched its seventh league title in a decade and 25th overall last weekend, just a week after it also won a fourth straight Copa del Rey.

Madrid is focused on trying to win a third straight Champions League to salvage an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Even though nothing was at stake, both teams played with all the emotion of a final.

"It was a very intense game from the very first minute," said Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde. "We started well, but the goals came quickly and the bookings hurt us."

While Madrid played its best after Suarez briefly put Barcelona ahead, Barcelona regrouped after Roberto was sent off.

Suarez started and finished off a quick attack when he played Roberto clear down the hole left by Marcelo on the right flank. Roberto returned a cross for the striker to sweep in with his right foot after Messi had drawn in two defenders with a run to the near post.

The joy at Camp Nou was short-lived. A missed tackle by Sergio Busquets left Toni Kroos to start a counterattack that Ronaldo finished off by sending a headed pass by Karim Benzema over the line to equal Alfredo Di Stefano's club record of 18 goals against Barcelona.

Ronaldo paid a price for the goal with Gerard Pique stepping on his ankle as he unsuccessfully tried to stop the Madrid forward from scoring.

Ronaldo appeared to shake off the injury. He led Madrid's push for a second goal and was only stopped when Marc-Andre ter Stegen closed out to block his shot

Barcelona began to lose its composure and Jordi Alba shoved Luka Modric before both Suarez and Sergio Ramos were booked for a tussle.

Messi earned himself a yellow for a hard tackle on Ramos before Roberto responded to Marcelo's bump from behind by slapping at his face. Marcelo fell down and the referee didn't hesitate in flashing the red card.

But halftime changed everything.

Ronaldo stayed on the bench and, without its star, Madrid couldn't impose its numerical advantage.

Suarez won the ball back from Raphael Varane after a side-to-side collision and passed to Messi, who used a blistering strike of his left boot to drive the ball just inside the post.

That goal took Messi's clasico record to 26 goals.

Messi looked poised to get another goal but Bale made it 2-2 by using one touch to curl Asensio's pass around Ter Stegen. With most of the players visibly tired and struggling to recover on defense, both sides had chances to get the win.

Barcelona's players held an impromptu celebration on the pitch for the result and the domestic double, with the coaching staff giving them the guard of honor that Madrid's players declined to do before kickoff.

Angel's late winner puts Getafe back in the final Europa League spot

Getafe's Europa League dreams are still alive after Angel Rodriguez scored an 88th minute winner at Las Palmas.

The already relegated team put up a good fight against the side from the capital, with Getafe forced into fielding a weakened XI as a result of a mini suspensions and injury crisis.

Alejandro Galvez came closest to scoring in the first half, as he headed an effort off the crossbar for Las Palmas, but Getafe survived and started to create some quality chances of their own towards the end of the game.

In the 76th minute, Jorge Molina had an excellent chance as a cross was played into him just in front of goal, but he somehow managed to shoot wide.

Then, just two minutes later, Angel struck the post, and it seemed that Getafe's were going to rue those missed opportunities.

However, Angel kept his composure when set up by Jorge Molina two minutes from time, to send Getafe back into seventh and one point above Sevilla - even if the Andalusian side do have a game in hand against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid suffer a Europa League hangover against Espanyol

For the second time this season Atletico Madrid suffered defeat against Espanyol, with the Barcelona-based side winning 2-0 at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone rested several players after the Europa League semi-final heroics of Thursday night and Espanyol took advantage against an XI which didn't contain Diego Godin or Antoine Griezmann, nor the suspended Angel Correa and Diego Costa.

The visitors first warned Los Rojiblancos in the first half, when Gerard Moreno drew an excellent stop from Jan Oblak, with the Slovenian touching the shot onto the post.

There was nothing Oblak could do, though, in the 53rd minute when Oscar Melendo's strike took a major deflection off Stefan Savic, who was trying to head the ball away and who ended up diverting it into the back of the net.

There wasn't much of a response from Atleti and their former player Leo Baptistao then added a second Espanyol goal with a powerful long-range finish in the 77th minute.

It was a disappointing performance and result for Atletico, especially as second place is no longer in their hands, with Real Madrid able to pinch the runners-up spot if they win out.

Malaga thumped by Alaves

Though already relegated, Malaga still have their pride to play for, but their performance against Alaves, a match in which they were thumped 3-0, suggests there are real problems behind the scenes.

How else do you explain such an insipid 90 minute from Los Boquerones?

It was always going to be a long afternoon for the hosts after conceding just three minutes in, Alaves' Manu Garcia the grateful recipient after Victor Lopez's assist.

Malaga were offering nothing as an attacking force, but were dogged in defence.

Such a backs-against-the-wall showing couldn't last and once Demirovic doubled the lead on 68, it wasn't long - two minutes in fact - before Ibai Gomez's goal gave the score line a more realistic look.
