Ministers and MPs reveal financial positions in declarations of assets

The Malta Independent has continued to compile the information on the declarations of assets of Parliamentary MPs.

Each year Members of Parliament are obliged to submit their declaration of assets, with Parliament acting as a repository for this information. MPs were given until the end of April to file their submissions.

Earlier in the week, this newsroom reported that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has curiously declared to Parliament that he holds exactly same amount in bank deposits, down to the last cent, since his declaration for the year 2014 (as at 31 December). It was also reported that Opposition Leader Adrian Delia's declaration revealed a substantial amount in loans, totalling €713,356.

The Labour Party

Minister Carmelo Abela

Foreign Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela owns his primary residence in Zejtun along with a holiday home in Marsascala. Through an inheritance, he also owns 1/6 of a property in Zejtun. Abela has €8,433 in his bank account, €10,572 in securities holdings, and a €116,152 loan.

Minister Evarist Bartolo

Minister for Education Evarist Bartolo has €26,615 in his bank accounts with BOV and HSBC and owns a property in Swieqi, which is his matrimonial home.

Minister Justyne Caruana

Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana declared she owned a property in San Lawrenz, Gozo, with her husband, Assistant Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta.  She also holds a total of €77,753 in bank accounts at BOV, HSBC, and APS; and has a loan of €35,866 towards her property.

Minister Michael Falzon

Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon’s declaration of assets showed that he has a bank balance of €623,800.

Falzon owns is home in Iklin, which has a remaining loan of €4,500, and owns some land in Bahrija.

He holds 4,000 ordinary shares at Middlesea and 11,370 ordinary shares at BOV.

 

Minister Michael Farrugia

Minister for Home Affairs and Internal Security Michael Farrugia declared he owned one property in Naxxar, half of two properties in Naxxar and St Julian’s, and a quarter of a property in Birzebbuga.

His bank balance is reported as  €132,899 and a loan of €50,494.

Minister Edward Scicluna

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna owns a property in Naxxar and half of another property in the same locality.

He also holds €689,000 in his bank account.

Julia Farrugia Portelli

Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Julia Farrugia, who was previously employed as the Communications and Stakeholder Manager at Projects Malta, declared she owned a property in Rabat and Balzan with her spouse, and held €21,923 in her bank account.  She is also a member on the Council for the Professions Complementary to Medicine.

 

Glenn Bedingfield

Glenn Bedingfield, who is employed as the Parliamentary Question coordinator with the government, has €17,519 in his bank account and owns his residential home in Bormla.

The Nationalist Party

Karol Aquilina

MP Karol Aquilina owns, along with his wife, his residential home in Siggiewi. He also owns part of another property in Siggiewi as part of an inheritance. Aquilina has 252 shares in Mapfre Middlesea, which were purchased for him by his parents. He has a combined €151,362 in various Malta-based banks; has loans for his home, car, and credit cards amounting to €282,725.

Therese Commodini Cachia 

Therese Commodini Cachia owns her matrimonial home in Siggiewi along with her husband and holds €61,815 in her HSBC bank account.

Jason Azzopardi

MP Jason Azzopardi declared he owned his residential home in Santa Lucija and an office in Paola. He holds €76,925 in his bank accounts, has 80,000 ordinary shares at Malita investments Plc, 5,472 ordinary shares at BOV, and 2,076 ordinary shares at Int Hotel Investments. He is also the company secretary and director at Energia Malta ltd.

Claudette Buttigieg

Deputy Speaker Claudette Buttigieg declared she owned a holiday residence in Qala and an office in Naxxar.  She serves at the director at Cliché Media, Kewta Ltd., and Future Media (non-active). She receives no salary for all the positions.  Her bank account totals to €42,152, while she has loans totalling up to €109,063.

Ryan Callus

MP Ryan Callus, who is employed at as an Environment Protection officer at the Directorate of Parks and is a director at the Lands Authority, holds a primary residence in Siggiewi, which was gifted to him by his parents, and owns a secondary property in the same locality. He also rents an office in Qormi from a third party.

He has around €4,800 in his bank account, against a home loan of €182,724 and a second loan of €15,209.

Robert Cutajar

PN Whip Robert Cutajar declared €27,856 in his bank account, and that he had a home loan of €28,753 on the property he owns and resides with his spouse, and has mortgage of €39,701.
