Investigators probing the bomb blast that injured a man in Gharghur earlier this week are looking at various theories, including the possibility that the bomb was being manufactured onsite, according to sources.

Kevin Ellul, 43, was seriously injured as the device went off seconds after he walked into a room forming part of an a property he owns in Triq l-Isqof Gargallo.

Debris from the door was blown out into the road, and two cars that were parked nearby were heavily damaged. One of the cars had a number of holes on its driver’s side door, which could have possibly been caused by ball bearings or other shrapnel.

According to reports, Ellul suffered injuries to his face and abdomen. Two other men were present at the scene when the blast took place, at around 3.05pm. One of them was being questioned by police but the other fled the scene and was being sought by police.

Ellul was rescued from the building by members of the Civil Protection Department after he became trapped beneath the debris.

CPD members visited the site again the following day and removed the concrete roof that had caved in. Members of the army’s bomb disposal unit and crime scene officers also continued to scour over the area, picking up clues and sending them for forensic testing.
