Friday, 1 June 2018, 06:40 Last update: about 9 years ago

A cyclist died this morning after he was hit by a car on the Regional Road, in the direction from St Julian's to Msida, and two lanes of that particular stretch are closed to traffic, the police said.

The cyclist is a 53-year-old Serbian who lived in Victoria, Gozo, the police said. The man, Zoran Pavlovic, was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where he died.

The cyclist was hit by a car, a Toyota Vitz, driven by a 35-year-old Libyan resident in Msida. Considerable damage was caused to the car while the bike ended up beneath the vehicle, with the handlebars protruding from under the engine.

The accident took place on the stretch overlooking the national pool, near the place where the niche dedicated to Our Lady used to be, at 5.45am.

Two lanes of the stretch of road where the accident took place were closed to traffic.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia is conducting an inquiry.
