Safeguarding freedom of internet use and rights of artists and authors

Francis Zammit Dimech Thursday, 12 July 2018, 10:01 Last update: about 7 years ago

In his vlog MEP Francis Zammit Dimech explains that if users want to have more content at their disposal including songs to listen and books to read we need to safeguard rights of artists including singers and songwriters along with authors and publishers. This is only possible through a new directive which also ensures freedom of internet use.

He pointed out that the use of memes and parodies will still permitted and that there will be absolutely no tax for sharing content such as hyperlinks on the internet. He said that his commitment reflects the work he has been doing over the past months to ensure that Maltese content creators get paid for work shared on YouTube.

Over the next days Zammit Dimech will be meeting further stakeholders to further discuss their concerns and challenges ahead of a crucial vote in plenary on a directive that deals with rights of artists and access to content. He encouraged interested parties to come forward with their ideas.
