Blitz is an initiative by the Cleansing and Maintenance Division (CMD) to provide additional services to Local Councils through an MOU which guarantees immediate, effective action in cleansing and maintenance services.
The first MOU was signed between the CMD and the St Paul’s Bay Local Council in June 2018 with the aim of providing such services to the communities of Buġibba, Xemxija, St Paul’s Bay, and Qawra.
This Blitz provided for:
* Additional waste collection services at 5pm from Monday to Friday;
* Street sweeping from Monday to Friday;
* Washing of streets, squares, and bus stations during the night;
* Washing of litter bins and street furniture;
* Grass cutting in residential areas;
* Removal of illegal waste in residential areas
* Power washing of public toilets and additional mobile cleaning services twice daily
* 500 hours of enforcement
The Blitz was devised to assist Local Councils of areas which experience an increase in population due to extraordinary circumstances, such as the high influx of tourist in the St Paul’s Bay area during the summer months.
“The St. Paul’s Bay area is tourist zone which attracts thousands of visitors, and whose residents deserve a clean, safe area. We want to make sure that the services rendered by the Cleansing & Maintenance Division reflect the needs of our communities” said Dr Debattista, Parliamentary Secretary for consumer protection and Valletta 2018 who is also responsible for the cleansing and maintenance division.
The Cleansing and Maintenance Division was established in 2017 following the inclusion of the maintenance arm to the previously existing cleansing Services Directorate. Today the division which is composed of 486 employees is split into 2 main functions offering a variety of services and fulfilling its core duty of keeping Malta clean. The recent economic upturn Malta has experienced led to the need of having a stronger division to keep up with an ever more demanding country.
Today the Division is involved in the cleaning and upkeep of arterial and distributor roads, the removal of illegal dumping, the servicing of beaches all over the coast of Malta, the upkeep and servicing of a number of public conveniences, the maintenance and upkeep of street furniture in pedestrian zones and the cleaning of rain water culverts.
