Professor Anglu Psaila, a former Labour Party candidate, died this morning, Health Minister Chris Fearne tweeted.
Psaila was a specialist in general medicine, paediatrics and a clinical cardiologist. He was 81.
Psaila was active in public health and contributed through radio and television programmes.
He was a candidate for the Labour Party in 1976, 1987 and 1992, but he was never elected.
In 2013 he was given Gieh ir-Repubblika for his contribution to medicine.
Psaila was born in Zabbar, and received his education at the Lyceum and University of Malta, graduating as a doctor in 1961.
He was appointed consultant physician at St Luke's Hospital and later deputy director of the department of medicine and professor of medicine at the University of Malta in 1978.
The Labour Party, in a statement, paid tribute to Psaila.
