Malta’s independence under threat by erosion of democratic mechanisms – PD

Malta’s independence is under not by any foreign power, but internally through a gradual but persistent erosion of all those democratic mechanisms which our forefathers had put in place to protect that independence and the general good of our people, Partit Demokratiku said.

PD said Independence marked the historical step where the Maltese could start taking decisions for their own well-being and for their future. It saluted those who, in the course of history, in their various roles , contributed towards the creation of the Maltese state.

“Many unsung heroes made it possible for a small people to move along and progress in so many fronts,” it said.

The party warned, however, that “the dismantling and weakening of the institutions , the deliberate compromises that have reduced the separation of powers between the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary have resulted in an all-powerful government that is riding roughshod over one and all. The free press is under threat, the PN Opposition is fragmented and rudderless, and government is taking decisions that are putting a lot that had been gained painstakingly in the past at risk.”

PD said Thursday’s decision on the db Group project in Pembroke was “a clear case where an emasculated Authority rubber-stamped a project which had created a groundswell of opposition with very legitimate concerns on its effect on the quality of life for thousands of residents. This is a government that is being driven by demagoguery and corruption, abetted by all-powerful lobbies,  trolls, fake news and cynical manipulation of social media.”

Partit Demokratiku said it will keep on fighting to protect those strata of society that are not gaining from the wealth that is being created, those that have been marginalised for whatever reason.

“PD will keep the fight for the protection of our environment which is being destroyed at the hands of bad planning and greedy speculators. PD will remain in the forefront for the return of the rule of law, decent politics and the guardianship of common good.”
