Tennis Roundup: Wozniacki and Kerber both lose in 3rd round of Wuhan Open

Second-ranked Caroline Wozniacki and third-ranked Angelique Kerber both lost Wednesday in the third round of the Wuhan Open.

Wozniacki lost to Olympic champion Monica Puig 7-6 (10), 7-5, while Wimbledon champion Kerber was upset by Ashleigh Barty 7-5, 6-1.

"I feel like we both know each other's game very well," said Puig, who is now 3-3 against Wozniacki. "I feel like the difference is who's going to take their opportunities and their chances, who's going to make or miss the shots."

Puig trailed in both sets and needed six set points to win the first set.

Barty snapped a seven-match losing streak against top-10 opponents by winning eight of the last nine games against Kerber. She will next face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who upset two-time champion Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"I feel like I'm a top-20 player," said Barty, who lost in last year's final. "Obviously we'd like to push towards top 10, but it was really important to prove to myself that the foundations we've set up are working."

Also, Dominika Cibulkova defeated 13th-seeded Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 7-6 (3), Chinese wild-card entry Qiang Wang beat Daria Gavrilova of Australia 7-5, 6-2, Aryna Sabalenka beat American qualifier Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3, and Anett Kontaveit defeated Zhang Shuai 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

 

Herbert upsets 2nd-seeded Tsitsipas at Shenzhen Open

Pierre-Hugues Herbert advanced to the quarterfinals of the Shenzhen Open by beating second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday.

The Frenchman won 79 percent of the points on his first serve and 55 percent on his second.

Also, Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka upset sixth-seeded Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5, and Albert Ramos-Vinolas beat Viktor Troicki 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (3).

 

Chung, Mannarino both upset at Chengdu Open

Second-seeded Hyeon Chung and fourth-seeded Adrian Mannarino both lost Wednesday at the Chengdu Open.

Canadian lucky loser Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Chung 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4, while Malek Jaziri upset Mannarino 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Auger-Aliassime saved five of eight break points in the match.

Also, seventh-seeded Joao Sousa defeated Vasek Pospisil 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (0), and Bernard Tomic beat Lloyd Harris 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (6).

 

Lapko wins, Zvonareva out at Tashkent Open

Vera Lapko reached the quarterfinals of the Tashkent Open on Wednesday by beating qualifier Ivana Jorovic 6-2, 6-4.

The 19-year-old Lapko, the highest-ranked player left in the draw at 64th in the world, will next face German player Mona Barthel.

Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva, once ranked second in the world, lost to Hungarian qualifier Fanny Stollar 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Stollar will next play Margarita Gasparyan, a Russian who has been plagued by knee injuries but reached her first tour-level quarterfinal since 2015 with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (2) victory over fifth-seeded Tatjana Maria.

Also, sixth-seeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova beat 2015 champion Nao Hibino 7-6 (5), 6-4.
