The social media is alight with comments – not to say judgments – after a photo was uploaded on Facebook showing Maltese football players celebrating with pizza after the national side obtained a 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan on Sunday.

The photo shows a pile of pizza boxes in the dressing room with the Maltese players expressing their joy after the result.

The draw comes at a time when the Maltese national team is under great pressure to perform following years of misery which took the side to its lowest ever position in the FIFA rankings. Not even a draw in Malta against Azerbaijan helped defuse the situation, with defeats against the Faroe Islands and Kosovo adding to Malta’s woes.

And so the draw in Baku on Sunday was some kind of liberation for the lads in red, and the Malta FA thought it fit to award them with pizza. But the national team’s detractors were quick to point out that pizza is not the right kind of nutrition that professionals should be eating.

The debate is aflame on the social media, with defenders of the national team arguing that the players deserved a treat after the result, while others pointed out that a draw should be no cause for celebration.
