People gather in silence in Bidnija to commemorate anniversary of Caruana Galizia assassination

Tuesday, 16 October 2018, 15:49 Last update: about 7 years ago

A group of people gathered in Bidnija this afternoon to commemorate the first anniversary of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination.

Caruana Galizia was assassinated outside her home by a car bomb on 16 October 2017.  So far three men, Vince Muscat, 55, known as 'il-Kohhu', Alfred Degiorgio, 52, 'il-Fulu' and George Degiorgio, 54, 'ic-Ciniz' have been charged with carrying out the murder. All three plead not guilty; while the perception remains that those who ordered the killing remain at large.

The attendees, who remained silent, laid flowers and candles at the site where Caruana Galizia's car exploded.

Two big banners were placed on the road, one with Caruana Galizia's face and a second with the word 'Justice'; while people also held up posters with "365", the number of days that have passed since the assassination.

A number of people were in attendance, including Former European Commissioner Tonio Borg, MEP Roberta Metsola, MP Simon Busuttil, MEP David Casa and MEP Ana Gomes.

A march calling for truth and justice will take place later on today at 7 pm in Valletta.
