Liam Debono, the 17-year-old who stands charged with the attempted murder of police constable Simon Schembri, was beaten up by five men at his workplace in Luqa on Friday afternoon.

He suffered a number of injuries to the face.

This newsroom was told that a whip might have been used in the assault.

TVM reported that Debono was discharged from Mater Dei Hospital after receiving treatment. He then went to file a report at the Paola police station.

The assailants have not yet been identified and, according to reports, Debono told the police that he did not recognise his assailants.

It is understood that the police have lifted CCTV footage from the area where the assault took place.

Debono was in the news last week after a magistrate banned TVM show Xarabank from airing a recorded interview with him.
