An Albanian man was arrested after he managed to enter a military facility in Safi.

According to reports, the man first tried to enter the nearby Aviation Park. The man drove a Volkswagen Golf with stolen plates into a car park, stopping by a wall that separates the car park from the aviation company’s premises. He then climbed on the car bonnet and tried to scale the fence.

Spotted by security officials, he turned back, crossed the road and scaled the fence surrounding the Safi army barracks. The man pointed a gun towards members of the Detention Service stationed at the barracks.

He was later surrounded, arrested and disarmed.  A number of soldiers and members of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit and the anti-terrorism unit were involved in the arrest.

TVM reports that the car license plates were stolen from another vehicle in Cirkewwa. It also reported that drugs were found inside the car.

The Albanian, who injured himself while scaling the fence, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia is leading an inquiry. The police are still trying to establish the motive behind the man’s attempts to enter the airport grounds.
