Lija turned defeat into victory against Qrendi yesterday to move further up in the table. Before the match the Lija players paid tribute to their ex President Charles Scerri who passed away this week, and on the field dedicated to him this victory.

It was a hard earned win for Lija who had to play the last quarter of an hour with a man less when Patrick Borg received a second booking.

Qrendi went on the attck in the opening minutes and deservedly took the lead with a Christian Caruana freekick. Lija however absorbed the pressure and then got more in the game and eventually drew level on 41 minutes with a Bello Osagie header.

In the second half Lija were the better team and took the lead on 73 minutes when Aaron Sammut scored a very good goal from a freekick. Minutes later Lija were down to ten men but defended well to earn a precious victory.

Pembroke A-San Gwann              0-1

Pembroke A: K. Gerada, G. Azzopardi, M. Focsa, B. Muscat, C. Gustavo, D. Camilleri, T. Fenech, M. Wilmsen, Y. Tonna, K. Borg, J.P. Mifsud Triganza.

San Gwann: M. Mestrovic, J. Azzopardi, A. Borg, C. Gauci, R. Zammit, A. Cachia, K. Gatt, N. Ferreira, G. Henshaw, S. Hili, G. Zammit.

Referee: Paul Toledo

Scorer: Andre Cachia 84'

San Gwann's revival continued yesterday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium when with an Andre Cachia late goal, they defeated Pemborke to earn the third successive victory and move from the bottom two places in the table, even if they have played a game more tha their direct rivals Zejtun and Marsa.

For Pembroke it was another disappointment in a series of negative results that are hindering the side. The match was cagey, boring at times with both defences in top form.

However it was a defensive blunder that led Pembroke down when their goalkeeper failed to clear adequately and Cachia lobbed the ball home. On 90 minutes Pembroke should have obtained at least a point when Kurt Borg's shot slammed against the post.
