Fix rule of law or risk losing EU funds

Francis Zammit Dimech Tuesday, 18 December 2018, 11:13 Last update: about 6 years ago

In his vlog MEP Zammit Dimech explains how throughout his work as MEP, several stakeholders speak to him about EU funding. Scientists want more funds for research, artists from small organisations want easier access to EU funding and farmers want EU funds to be paid in a timely manner.

He says that this shows that EU funds matter in the lives of many. Yet he recalls how the Budget committee in the European Parliament has set rules to suspend or prohibit access to EU funding in case rule of law in a member state is not fully respected.

He also refers to the findings of the Venice Commission, an independent body of the Council of Europe on the shortcomings in the rule of law in Malta. He appeals to the government to change course and take action before it will be too late. Failure to do so will put at risk EU funds which make a difference in our lives.
