Monday, 24 December 2018, 07:11 Last update: about 6 years ago

Former Prime Minister and Maltese MEP Alfred Sant pledged he will continue to safeguard the interests of all Maltese and Gozitans in Europe with optimism and dilegence till the end of his mandate at the European Parliament and afterwards depending on his personal circumstances.

Sant said he will continue to give his constant attention to understand the the effects of changes and developments, for good or for worse, on the Maltese and Gozitans in his last message of his mandate of MEP which started in 2014.

“It is important that our country exploits every opportunity which can unfold in Europe and beyond and that we continue to live as a society in economic and social progress ensuring solidarity and social justice among us.”

Sant said this year witnessed strong economic growth in Malta which should encourage us to work harder to sustain it.

“This progress has brought with it new social problems, some of them new for our country. We must understand and adapt to the new circumstances created by the same progress with efficiency, consideration and above all social justice.”

Sant said that our circumstances reflect positively on the wellbeing of the Maltese nation, compared to conditions in Europe.

“This year confirmed a sense of uncertainty in Europe, despite the economic growth in the EU and in the eurozone. The Brexit question has not yet been resolved. The same can be said on the immigration crisis. In the meantime, political extremes of the right and of the left remain strong and strengthen their positions.”

Sant expressed his best wishes for Christmas and wishing a prosperous New Year to all Maltese and Gozitans and their families, to the foreigners living and working in Malta.
