House of kitsch

Sunday, 20 January 2019, 08:15 Last update: about 6 years ago

Restless Catholics are always seeking something new to fill the void in their feeble faith, whether it is a new cult of 'mercy' or a childish crib, a new dubious 'saint' or a 'miraculous sanctuary'.

Their latest novelty is a private home in Marsa which has been converted into a 'house of prayer', replete with doll-like statues and other Catholic kitsch.

On opening day, the devotees flocked to this chapel, as if there aren't enough 'adoration chapels' where they can do their adoring.

The old churches of Malta have become the 'tombs and sepulchres of God'.
