Gillieru Harbour Hotel of St Paul's Bay are the new main sponsors of Sirens FC, current leaders of the Bank of Valletta First Division.

The announcement was made yesterday by club president Mark Borg Hedley during a news conference at the Gillieru Restaurant.

Borg Hedley said this season marked the 50th anniversary since the club's foundation. He added: "We are just past midway through the season and the club is leading the First Division with three points. Last summer we revamped the squad, including a change in the technical staff. Our dream is that our team will earn promotion to play in the Premier League for the first time ever in the history of the club. Now that we are in the current position, we firmly believe that we can reach our target."

He also said the club was looking forward for the sponsorship to be confirmed for many years to come.

He thanked the general manager of the Gillieru Harbour Hotel, Stephen Cremona, who on behalf of the company, accepted to sponsor the club for this season.

The Gillieru Restaurant is not only well known in the locality, but also around Malta and Gozo. It opened its doors to patrons on 23 May 1965 and specialises in seafood. The 4-star hotel next to it also forms part of the company.

Mr Cremona said it was his pleasure to be aiding the locality's football club which is on the verge of writing history by earning promotion to the top league in Malta.

He said: "It is a historic day and this is why I hope to see Sirens FC making progress which is so much desired. I augur the club - and my company - to get better results in their forthcoming matches. This is a dream for us both. It is a great challenge, but if successful it will become easier to continue helping them at the top level."

Club secretary David Muscat confirmed that the club has a big project in mind which can only be done with the help of other sponsors. "This project has nothing to do with the Gillieru sponsorship.

"It is something different. The project - if it materialises - will see the stadium pulled down to make way for a four-storey building which will include a two storey car park below street level, a supermarket and a shopping complex at street level and the football ground (to include the nursery premises) on top.

Muscat also said that the squad has continued to be strengthened during this month's transfer market with the arrival of three players - Russel Fenech from Valletta, Gaetano Gesualdi from Qormi and Ryan Previ from Vittoriosa Stars.
