Two men have been arraigned on charges relating to the discovery of a massive drug stash in Hamrun.

Tomislav Hegedus, 27 from Mosta and a 33 year-old man from Hamrun who cannot be named at the orders of the court were charged separately before magistrate Josette Demicoli this morning.

Inspector Kevin Pulis said that police were informed of a drug deal by confidential sources. After covertly observing the conspirators for a time, the police decided to move out of cover and arrest the men.

The Hamrun resident was stopped and some 140 capsules of cocaine were found in his car, he said. More drugs were found in his home garage in Hamrun.

On his part, Hegedus was allegedly the coordinator behind the trafficking said the prosecution.

The inspector said the police were still working hard to crack the case. “If anyone is thinking the police are sitting back and toasting this seizure I can say it is not the case. We are continuing to work.” This work was in its earliest stages and it would not be helpful to have the accused able to tamper with evidence they are yet to collect, said the inspector.

Bail was denied in both cases.

Lawyers Martha Mifsud, Alfred Abela and Franco Debono appeared for the accused men.

A 33-year-old man of Hamrun was arrested in Fgura after 1.5 kilogrammes of cocaine capsules were found in the car he was driving.

The police later searched a garage in Hamrun, where they seized 11.5  kilogrammes of cannabis.

A second man, aged 27 of Mosta, was later arrested.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja is conducting an inquiry.
