Friday, 8 February 2019, 13:30 Last update: about 6 years ago

Sixteen employees received the Safe Driver award by Malta Public Transport after being identified as the safest professional drivers with an impeccable performance over two straight years.

"Road safety is one of our core values at Malta Public Transport," explained general manager Konrad Pulé. "These 16 drivers have made a difference and are leading by example with their attitude towards safe driving. Everybody has a role to play in road safety and I encourage more and more drivers to work harder to help us reduce accidents even further."

The awarded drivers are Vincent Camilleri, John Mary Ciappara, Spiridione Curmi, Andrew Debrincat, Ahmed El Mehdy, Conrad Ellul, Tanya Farrugia, Saviour Farrugia, Joe Fenech, Brian Galea, Alfio Galea Naudi, Joseph Grech, Carmelo Meilak, Joe Mifsud, Salvatore Palladino and Jeffrey Sammut.

Road safety is a top priority for Malta Public Transport and the company delivers ongoing training to drivers to nurture a culture of safety. The Safe Driver awards demonstrate the high standards that Malta Public Transport sets for itself and are a recognition of the drivers who achieve them.

Although the company has significantly increased the number of professional drivers it employs and the number of routes it operates since it took over the operation in 2015, the number of accidents involving public transport buses was reduced by 25%, when comparing 2018 to 2015.

Accidents caused by third party vehicles have however increased over the past three years and the company urges all road users not to block roads and to give way to buses as this will improve everyone's experience on the road.
