Malta FA Trophy: Hibs-Valletta match is the highlight as clubs battle for Last 4 berth

The match between the two teams fighting for this year's League title - Hibernians and Valletta - is the highlight of this weekend's programme which only features the FA Trophy quarterfinals.

Two matches are being played at the Hibernians Stadium this afternoon, while the other two games are to be played tomorrow at the National Stadium.

HIBS-VALLETTA

As already said, this match is expected to attract a lot of attention as the two teams are involved in a two-horse race for the title.

At present, after last weekend's matches, Hibernians are leading the standings two points ahead of their rivals.

Only a few weeks ago, in the direct match between them, Valletta emerged victorious in a highly controversial encounter, having to come back from behind to register a narrow 2-1 win.

Tomorrow's match will obviously be a chance for the Paolites to taste sweet revenge over the Citizens. But this one is also expected to be a hard-fought game which, in my opinion, has no clear favourites.

Both teams disappointed their fans with their performances the past weekend. Hibernians, however, did manage to beat St Andrews 2-1 scoring two late goals to overturn a 0-1 deficit.

But Valletta had to dig deep to keep lowly Senglea Athletic from registering a sensational victory as they managed an injury time equaliser to go home with a point.

The Citizens will also be defending last year's title as they won the Trophy at the expense of Birkirkara in the final.

PIETA-GZIRA

Gzira should face no difficulty in advancing into the Last 4 as they face the struggling Pieta side this afternoon.

The Maroons are placed third in the League and seem to have a good chance of making it to the Europa League also next season, either through the League or via a Trophy win.

Judging from last weekend's performances, Pieta seem to have a massive mountain to climb, and will have to play much better than they did on Sunday against Balzan if they wish to give the Maroons a good run for their money.

Gzira will certainly do well not to take their opponents for granted, because in such matches, there is always room for a surprise as has happened in earlier rounds.

The two teams figured in a 1-1 draw in the first round Premier League match.

MOSTA-BIRKIRKARA

Even here, in today's second match at the Hibernians Stadium, Birkirkara seem to have enough guns to outgun lowly Mosta.

But like Gzira, they cannot take things for granted. They cannot forget that Mosta eliminated none other than Sliema Wanderers in the last round.

Unlike Gzira, the Stripes only hope for a European berth next season is probably through an FA Trophy victory. This is because although they are still in contention for the 3rd place in the League, however, they are still five points behind Gzira with eight matches remaining to be played.

Their opponents, Mosta, are passing through quite a good patch at present. Apart from eliminating Sliema from this competition, they have also won 7 points from their last three games in the Premier League, having beaten Tarxien and the high-riding Hamrun, apart from earning a good point from a goalless draw against Balzan.

This shows that they will certainly be giving the Stripes a good run for their money.

In the first round Premier League match between the two teams, the Stripes ran out easy 3-0 winners.

TARXIEN-BALZAN

Balzan will certainly be eyeing a place in the semifinals as they face Tarxien Rainbows in tomorrow's first quarterfinal.

On paper, they are firm favourites to go through, but as already stated, in such matches no one can determine what can really happen on the field of play.

In their last match, new coach Jacques Scerri must have been very satisfied with the team's performance against Pieta.

They were so superior that they did not even allow their opponents to have a single pot at goal.

Today, however, it could be a different affair, as Tarxien will probably be a different kettle of fish.

The Rainbows, having advanced so far, will certainly try to make it look better by advancing into the Last 4.

They are certainly aware of the task ahead of them but to be of any nuisance to Balzan, they must improve their performance considerably after last Friday's poor show against Sliema.

In the Premier League first round match, Balzan had emerged winners 3-1.
