The runway at the Malta International Airport was closed for 30 minutes this afternoon after a pilot spotted a drone as he was about to land a plane.

Air controllers closed the runway at around 12.15pm and re-opened it some 30 minutes later.

Members of the Armed Forces of Malta and the Police are on site searching for the person who flew the drone.

Initial information indicates that the drone was being flown from the Birżebbuġa area.

No flights were cancelled.
