Outgoing President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Indepth

Thursday, 14 March 2019, 13:06 Last update: about 6 years ago

Outgoing President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was the latest guest to be invited onto the latest episode of Indepth.

During the programme, she was asked by Malta Independent Editor-in-Chief Rachel Attard about a raft of issues such as what she would like to see reformed within the constitution, her apparent praise of Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan in a recent state visit, the developing question of poverty in the country, and what her plans for after the Presidency look to be.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was appointed as the 9th President of the Republic in April 2014 having served as an MP representing the Labour party between 1998 and 2014.  When the Labour Party was elected to government in 2013 she took on the role of Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity.

Under her auspices, the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society was set up – an entity which she shall remain at the head of even after she steps down from the country’s top role.

Former Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella has been nominated to succeed Coleiro-Preca and become the 10th President of the Republic.  The Opposition has said that it will support Vella’s nomination, and he will be appointed President next month.

The programme will be uploaded on Friday.
