Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant today lauded Government’s commitment and efforts to protect and promote Malta’s historical and cultural heritage which is of utmost importance to encourage the tourism industry, one of the main pillars of the Maltese economy.

The Maltese MEP visited the Domus Romana, a ruined Roman-era house in Rabat built in the 1st century BC as an aristocratic town house. A Muslim cemetery was established on the remains of the domus in the 11 century AD.

Alfred Sant praised Heritage Malta’s initiative to invite Maltese and tourists free of charge to visit this unique archaeological site.

“If we ignore our historical and cultural heritage, if we destroy our environment, if we encourage over development, if we pollute our seas, tourism will cease to be the main pillar of our economy.”

Alfred Sant said that Maltese tourism is one of the few assets which increases our competitivity in this sector. Tourists visit us to enjoy our mild climate, history,  our traditions while enjoying their personal security.
