Malta ranks 22nd happiest country in World Happiness Report

Malta has been placed 22nd happiest country out of 156 countries, according to the World Happiness Report released today.

The World Happiness Report ranked 156 countries on the happiness of their citizens, based on numerous factors such as life expectancy, social support and corruption.

When compared to last year’s report, Malta remains in 22nd in place, and is ranked as the 12th happiest country in the European Union. It obtained 6.726 points.

The top five happiest countries in the world are Europe’s Nordic nations, Finland (7.769), Denmark (7.600), Norway (7.554), Iceland (7.494) and Netherlands (7.488).

South Sudan was at the bottom of the happiness index, whilst Central African Republic, Afghanistan and Tanzania were also ranked just above.

The UK placed 15th, up from 19th last year, one above Ireland and four above the US - which came in at its lowest ranking ever at 19th. 

Italy and Spain ranked below Malta, at 36th and 30th respectively.

Panama is in 31st place, while Azerbaijan is in the 90th position.
