PD 'to safeguard public interest' in relation to AUM extension

Partit Demokratiku is objecting to a planning application (PA7496/16) that calls for the extension of the American University of Malta at Cottonera.

“Three open unprotected public spaces are going to be roofed over by 5 floor buildings just outside Senglea, on sites located in the Urban Conservation Area of Cottonera. We even uncovered that a building to be constructed in a public open space is for some reason to include a swimming pool. This is all to take place in an area of high landscape value," PD Deputy Leader Timothy Alden said.

Moreover, the existing Knights’ maritime stores are going to be extensively altered internally, including the demolition of the original 'xorok tal-qasba' ceilings. It is high time that the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage calls a spade a spade and digs into the necessary archaeological studies before the application is further processed,” Alden said.

“It is indeed ironic how the Knights’ building is not scheduled. These were the boathouses of the Order’s galleys. This side of Cottonera is a precious part of Malta’s maritime history,” states General Secretary and MEP candidate Martin Cauchi Inglott.

“One such open space, the staircase that separates the two AUM buildings, was part financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the slogan ‘The citizens’ right to accessibility and mobility.’ The hopes for continued accessibility and mobility are looking slim. The other space under threat is a popular public boatyard and play area whilst the final space is an open public parking place used by the community, which will become private parking,” states MEP candidate Cami Appelgren.

“Partit Demokratiku is all for additional educational opportunities and investment as offered by Sadeen’s American University of Malta, so long as it is done in an above the board fashion and respects the genuine public interest, especially with consideration to Malta’s heritage, environment, landscape and livable open space. These are the very reasons it is my duty to file an Objection,” Alden said.
