Updated: Romanian injured after fork-lifter topples over at Palumbo shipyard

A Romanian man was injured when a fork-lifter toppled over at the Palumbo shipyard in Paola on Sunday evening, the police said.

The man, aged 30, was on a fork-lifter which was being operated by a 20-year-oll compatriot.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement, Palumbo said that the Romanian is expected to be released shortly.

He was admitted last night after he was hurt when the forklift truck he was driving toppled over while he was carrying out work at the shipyard.

Shipyard officials were immediately on hand to assist the man and contacted the emergency services, which took the man to hospital, the shipyard said.

A spokesman for Palumbo said: “The shipyard abides by the highest international safety standards and the welfare of our employees is always our top priority. We will continue to provide our employee with all the support he requires following this unfortunate incident and are in the process of establishing the cause.”
