A Calil penalty half way through the second was enough for Hamrun Spartans to beat relegation troubled Qormi and move temporarily to fourth place in the standings, and keep in the hunt for a European berth next season.

Hamrun who had back Giovanni Tedesco on the bench, were the better team especially in the first thirty minutes when they took a deserved lead with a rather soft goal scored by Domoraud. However Qormi made a very good reaction in the final part of the first half, putting the Hamrun defence under pressure.

At the start of the second half Hamrun were again in control but Qormi drew level after ten minutes play. This goal gave Qormi new lease of life as they were now in search for more, but half way through the second half, Hamrun won a penalty which proved to be the winner.

Qormi failed to react after this setback and Hamrun controlled with relative ease going close a third goal near the end when Domoraud hit the upright.

In the opening minutes there were attempts at both end with Marra for the Spartans and Reggis for Qormi hitting well over the bar. On nine minutes Henneberg had a good header slightly missing the target.

Hamrun were more on the ball and a Henneberg shot on the turn was well saved by Cassar. On 20 minutes Hamrun missed a sitter when Domoraud headed incredibly wide when all alone in front of goal following an inch perfect cross from Tulimieri.

But four minutes later Hamrun did forge ahead when Domoraud's header from a Pepe long ball found the back of the net, with the help of Qormi goalkeeper Cassar who was rather hesitant and should have blocked his header.

Qormi's only response came from a Yankam effort with his shot just over the bar. On 32 minutes Qormi went close to an equaliser when the Hamrun defence was caught napping but Bangoura failed to score from an ideal position.

Qormi were now more in the game and a Lokando low drive went wide. On 43 minutes Qormi almost made it when Bangoura did all the running on the right flank and crossed towards Reggis whose low drive just missed the base of the upright. In stoppage time a Nikolopoulos header was well saved by Cassar.

Ten minutes into the second half Qormi drew level when Yannick Yankam fired home with a shot on the turn following a corner action. Hamrun tried to get back in front but a Calil freekick went over the bar and Caruana shot sky high when well served by Micallef.

On 68 minutes Tulimieri was tripped inside the area by Santana and from the penalty spot Caetano Calil made no mistake with a low drive that sent Cassar the wrong way. Qormi pushed forward but by now they have lost their touch up front.

Hamrun on the other hand were finding more space in the Qormi rearguard and five minutes from time could have sealed the issue when Calil went through on the left flank and his cross found Domoraud unmarked but his shot hit the upright.
