Zejtun is paying tribute to George Vella as today he takes on the role of Malta’s Head of State.

Hundreds of people, many of whom know Vella personally, and schoolchildren waving Maltese flags lined the street and showed their excitement when the then President-elect emerged from his home.

These people greeted the much loved doctor with a sense of pride and sincerity in a vibrant and, at times, emotional atmosphere.

Many of them recalled anecdotes related to the former Foreign Minister and Labour deputy leader, who worked in his hometown as a doctor for decades.

Children shouted "George Vella" as he walked out of his house and along the street, greeting well-wishers and sharing a few words with people who have known him for many years and others whi just wanted to shake his hand before he becomes Malta's First Citizen.

Rain strated trickling as soon as Vella's car was driven away.

The Malta Independent spoke to some of those present with these people all speaking extremely highly of Vella.

Many commented on Vella’s medical prowess and his dedication to, above all, healing and helping people. One person who was a patient of his described the courage she used to gain when she went to him, while another spoke of how Vella had helped his brother come through a difficult time

As a person, he was described as being humble, the ultimate gentleman and having a heart of gold; a person who is the ideal fit for the role of Malta’s official head of state.

Watch what some Zejtun residents had to say about Vella.
