Saturday, 6 April 2019, 08:01 Last update: about 6 years ago

Malta needs Alfred Sant, Prime Minister Josepoh Muscat said at the launch of the veteran politician's bid for the European Parliament election.

"Alfred has the experience and the vision to represent Malta at the European Parliament. I asked him publicly to contest the European elections because Malta  needs him,  the Labour Party needs him. We cannot afford to lose his presence at the European Parliament. I believe that his contribution towards the well being of Malta is invaluable. Alfred doesn’t need endorsements, he doesn’t need anyone to speak about his qualities," Muscat said.

Alfred Sant’s European elections campaign has the theme "Confidence in Malta - for a social Europe"..

“I thank him for his indispensable contribution. I followed his interventions at the European Parliament to defend Malta, to defend me personally, to defend the Labour Party and above all to defend Malta.  I can only say that it had been very difficult to convince him to contest the European elections. I thank those who helped me achieve this aim. ”

The Prime Minister spoke about  Alfred Sant’s  incessant efforts in silence to convince European Socialists to voice the concerns of common citizens.

“I wish Alfred the best, from the bottom of my heart. I wish him many more years of work because Malta needs him.”  the Prime Minister told the large audience.

Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant  said that if elected in the European Parliament, he will strive to work for a Social Europe and to defend Malta’s interests first and foremost.

Alfred Sant said that during the last years, Europe’s social credentials were ignored.

“Now is the time to work to build a Social Europe. I invite you to help us rebuild a Social Europe which defends the young people, which defends workers, which defends pensioners, which defends those who need social protection.”

Alfred Sant said we must ensure confidence in our country.

“I am a Maltese first and foremost, then a European. During the last years I was disgusted with the those among us who tried to undermine Malta’s interests at the European Parliament. It is for this reason that we must express our confidence in Malta in Europe and elsewhere in the coming years.”

Alfred Sant spoke on the importance that everyone votes for all the Labour candidates to strengthen Malta’s voice in Europe.

“This will be the last election I will be contesting. I promise you that I will be giving my utmost to defend Malta’s interests at the European Parliament.” Alfred Sant told the crowd.

The launch was also addressed by  Alison Zerafa Civelli and ChristianZammit.

Alison Zerafa Civelli said Alfred Sant always had a long term vision for Malta. “People frequently tell me Alfred Sant was right in what he told us. Alfred is a person I admire. I will remain grateful to him for giving me the courage to work for the Labour Party.”

Christian Zammit said Malta and Gozo deserve to be represented by Alfred Sant at the European Parliament.

“There are lots of wolves at the European Parliament who are ready to undermine Malta’s successes under Prime Minister Muscat’s leadership. It is for this reason that Malta needs Alfred Sant to shield us from these unwarranted attacks.”

A video message by Minister Helena Dalli endorsing Alfred Sant’s candidature was shown during the activity.
