Children’s Commissioner sees nothing wrong for 14-year-olds to be party members

Commissioner for Children Pauline Miceli sees nothing wrong for 14-year-olds to be taken in as members of political parties.

She was asked to give her views after the Labour Party announced that 14-year-olds can now join the party as members. Two years ago the PN had also allowed 14-year-olds to join, but they cannot vote for the new leader or deputy leaders.

Miceli replied as follows:

“The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child insists on a minor’s right to have an opinion that is listened to as well as the right to association and affiliation with groups and organizations of their choice.”

“Moreover, the National Children’s Policy recognizes that children should be active citizens who engage in the democratic process and have a say in all matters that concern them directly or indirectly.”

“Lowering the age of becoming a member of a political party is in line with this and one should say it is an expected outcome after giving 16-year-olds the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. Affiliation to a political party at 14 years would give them the possibility to formulate their political ideology and gain an insight in preparation for full participation in politics.”

“It is also important that adolescents are encouraged to think critically and engage in activities/discussions that render them full members of society.”

She did, however, make it a point to insist that “political parties should take the necessary measures to protect minors from unnecessary exposure and exploitation, and ensure their best interests at all times”.
