The Cleansing and Maintenance Division, in addition to daily routine duties, conducts various works related to localities’ upkeep. Periodically the division also interveens to cleanse the bastions from grass and other material.

Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici thanked the employees within the Cleansing and Maintenance Division for all their hard work to maintain our country’s upkeep and stated that through their work, we are further promoting awareness towards safer and cleaner areas.

“Collaboration is an intrinsic part when it comes to providing an efficient and better service, in fact, the Division has carried out Local Council works amounting to €1,449,000 in 2018. As a Government we are committed to further improve the standard of living of our communities, by providing safer and cleaner spaces for the benefit of everyone,” said Minister Bonnici.

Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Rights, Public Cleansing and Support for the Capital City Deo Debattista explained that the Cleansing and Maintenance Division provides assistance to various local councils even on their own request, especially where local councils do not have contractors to carry out certain works, and in other cases due to emergency cases. "In the first 4 months of this year this figure already stands at €612,875," reitriated Parliamentary Secretary Debattista.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis said that this Government seriously believes in the environment and in maintaining cleanliness in our country. This is why more educational initiatives and actions to clean our environment will be launched through the Local Government reform. Moreover waste collection will be given more priority. This reform will ensure that there will be an effective operation of contract management, better standards, and that the coordination on the call for the waste collection contract will be on a regional basis. Furthermore this reform provides that by law, all Local Councils will now have a Councillor responsible for cleanliness and for the environment. Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Parnis said that local enforcement is also tackling important areas such as the environment.
