Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, along with his delegation, met today to discuss and ‘clarify’ the ongoing conflict in Libya.

“We are happy to be here to meet you”, al-Sarraj said, for the opportunity to clarify what is going on in his country and to show the negative impact of the attack on Tripoli.

“We are looking forward to discussing the details on how we can overcome these challenges and on how we can work together.”

Muscat thanked al-Sarraj for coming to Malta, saying that he was looking forward to discussing what is happening in Libya.

“It is of obvious first hand and of deep concern for us as a people, both because of our geographical proximity and also because we regard the Libyan people as very close friends.”

He explained that they the government is following what is happening, and “will always be there to foster any sort of contact and agreement in order to secure the peace and prosperity in Libya”.

“For us, that is a key obligation, and also very high on our international agenda.”

Muscat said that he is looking forward to discussing with the Libyan Prime Minister and his delegation, and how the Government can be of any assistance.

Fayez al-Sarraj leads the Government of National Accord, which is back by the international community and is currently at odds with Hifter, who runs the self-styled Libya National Army based in the country’s east.
