PN treasurer David Camilleri resigns, but pledges loyalty to Adrian Delia

In another twist in the ongoing Nationalist Party saga, party treasurer David Camilleri has also resigned.

Camilleri was named as having allegedly not had the right to vote in last Saturday’s election to co-opt an MP instead of David Stellini. The party executive committee voted for Jean Pierre Farrugia who has however renounced to his seat.

On Saturday, the president of the party executive committee, Mark Anthony Sammut, also resigned.

In a long post on Facebook, Camilleri said that in the wake of all that happened, he had no option but to resign. Camilleri however pledged his loyalty to party leader Adrian Delia.

He said it was clear that his name was on the list because both candidates, Debono and Kevin Cutajar, had called him to explain why they should be the one he should vote for.

He said that the treasurer, if chosen from outside the executive committee, should not have a vote. But Camilleri had previously represented the 11th district, and his name was on the list of voters which, he said, was not something that he agreed with.

He said he had taken part in the discussion on the subject in hand and none of the 81 other voters told him that he should not vote.

Stellini, during the meeting, said that he was ready to stay on as president of the administrative committee, and it occurred to no-one that the position was tied to a parliamentary seat.

He said that neither did it occur to anyone that both he (Camilleri) and David Stellini should not be allowed to vote. It could be that no-one realised that they could not, or else somebody noticed and chose to remain silent to create the problem after the vote to cause damage to the party.

Camilleri said that the vote should be retaken to ensure transparency.

Camilleri believed that everyone should shoulder responsibilities and he was thereby resigning the post of treasurer. He however declared loyalty to Delia.
