Jellyfish invasion in Marsalforn

Sunday, 9 June 2019, 18:02 Last update: about 6 years ago

Marine biologist Alan Deidun said the jellyfish bloom which kicked off last March sees no sign of abating.

Writing on Facebook, Malta’s ocean ambassador said that the photo he uploaded, taken in Marsalforn, shows a massive collection of jellyfish known as mauve stinger (Pelagia noctiluca)

“Obviously, avoid swimming under such circumstances and, if stung, use a mixture of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and seawater (never freshwater)....

Replying to comments beneath his post, Deidun said his "hunch is that the bloom will be over as soon as the water temperature picks up and thus potential food that the jellyfish bloom depends on will run out - such a bloom came 2 months earlier last year, due to an anomalously warm and dry January."
