The Nationalist Party is not experiencing a gain nor a loss, but a lesson – Delia

The Nationalist Party's attitude is to learn and move forward, Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said today.

"What happened over the past few days was neither a gain nor a loss for the party, but a lesson."

Delia was speaking during an interview on Net FM, where he commented that whilst he takes on responsibility as a leader, he needs people to develop their attitude towards the party. "We must have the determination to win, the attitude to win and not to keep losing. I need people, not just members of the party, but also others, who want to improve the party's situation and are ready to come together to start seeing results."

Delia admitted that he is aware that currently the PN is not strong enough to run the country, and that he is ready to change and improve on the party's structures. "I am ready to do my research and to see where we have gone wrong, and to strengthen what we are doing well. I want to talk about the future and to listen to what the youths wish to see." He mentioned that he had noted the criticism made by the MZPN (Nationalist Youth Party) and that he is ready to reflect and meet with the youth group to discuss the way forward.

"I am ready to listen to our youths and for us to work together. We all need to give our all, our timelines for particular milestones and to start working; otherwise all we will be doing is speaking and taking no action."

Delia also spoke about Gozitan candidate Kevin Cutajar being elected as David Stellini's replacement in Parliament. "I have heard numerous discussions regarding Cutajar's disability and how Parliament would need to change to accommodate him. But really I see Kevin not as someone with a disability, but with the ability to work hard and to improve on our situation." Delia said that there needs to be more discussion regarding the ability found within each and every person with a disability and that the party must meet with more diverse groups of people to highlight on this issue. He said that the Party must strengthen these themes and to be there for these people.

"The debate on Xarabank was not there as advertising the Party, but as a message that Delia will debate and listen to everyone"

When asked regarding last Friday's debate on Xarabank, Delia explained that he is ready to debate and more importantly to listen to everyone, whether or not they are with the party. "I accepted the debate straight away, and I will also listen to those who are critical of me and the party. I also invite them to the table to give us feedback and provide us with their opinions on how we can move forward." He said that the concept of a debate is not to win the argument, but to provide an opportunity for people to listen to their ideas and discuss, so that they can then take a decision on what is best for the party and country.

Regarding yesterday's accident in Melieha, where a building collapsed yesterday morning, Delia stressed the need for long term planning. "We cannot continue to frantically develop our country and not follow any standards, as this will only continue to result in such accidents." He said that the government is rushing development for economic growth without any means of sustainable and constructive planning.

"Planning and building authorities must do their research to make sure that these accidents do not happen again and how building development can be done in a more proper and safe means."

He stressed that the Nationalist Party wish for a safe Malta, not just in terms of environment, and criminality, but also safe development and construction. "There are so many buildings now on the island, and people are beginning to wonder in fear just how long they will last."
