A 10-year-old girl died in a traffic accident that took place at around 5.30pm in Manikata on Thursday.

The accident happened in Triq tal-Prajjet, Mellieha, between two vehicles, a Toyota Aygo that was being driven by a 49-year-old from Mtarfa, and a Nissan Leaf driven by a 35-year-old woman from Mellieha, the police said.

The girl appeared to have grievous injuries so an ambulance was called to take her to Mater Dei Hospital. She died some time later in hospital.

The girl's father and her 8-year-old sister were hospitalised with slight injuries.

According to some reports, the accident was caused by another car coming wrong way up the hill. The car in which the father and daughters were reportedly overturned on impact, with the victim being thrown out of the vehicle.

Duty magistrate Simone Grech launched an inquiry and assigned a number of experts to assist.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
