Għar l-Aħmar beach in Marsaxlokk has been extended by 15 metres and regenerated through the fitting of new facilities such as on-beach showers.

Launching the newly revamped beach, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said that the beach had been extended by using the sand already there and that the method statement used for the works had been agreed with the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA).

He said that this project is different from others that the Ministry has launched throughout the summer, in that the beach would be permanently extended, noting that a berm will be built in the sea following the end of summer.

Mizzi noted that projects such as these are part of his ministry’s commitment to improve the South of Malta and spread tourism everywhere.  He noted that the regeneration of Marsaxlokk has already begun, and after summer works will also start at the Tal-Magħluq area and at the Fisherman’s Promenade.  He said that Marsaxlokk will also be getting a new waterpolo pitch in the near future.

The project was led by the Malta Tourism Authority along with the Foundation for Tourism Zones Development in collaboration with the Marsaxlokk local council.

Present with Mizzi at the press conference were Justice and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Foreign Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela, both MPs who were elected from the electoral district that incorporates Marsaxlokk, and new Marsaxlokk mayor Stephen Grech along with the rest of the local council.
