Sunday, 4 August 2019, 20:37 Last update: about 6 years ago

The Maltese girls led by Sandro Farrugia and Maria Agius had to settle for silver yesterday as they were beaten 79-73 by Armenia in the final.

As expected the final was balanced and keenly contested between the two best teams of the tournament. The locals had a one-point advantage at the end of the third quarter but missed out in the final ten minutes with Armenia winning the quarter 21-14 to claim the European title.

However it must be said that the local girls made us proud with a very fine run and some impressive wins. Mikela Riolo was Malta's best yesterday with 19 points followed by Ylenia Bonett with 17, Michela Zammit Cordina with ten, Sasha Lecuyer with seven, and Anthea Micallef with two points.

The Maltese boys also terminated their commitments with a defeat against Andorra 56-52. The teams were still tied at the end of the third quarter but Andorra had the edge in the last session, and the Maltese boys had to settle for seventh place.

Malta's best scorer was Matthew Scerri with 13 points.
