The Malta Union of Teachers has given an ultimatum to the government for the start of negotiations on insurance to be provided to educators.

In a statement, the MUT said it has made representations with the Ministry for Education and Employment regarding the issue.

For years the position of the government was that it does not insure public officers. However recent developments have proved that the position of the government had changed and is now starting to issue insurances to specific employees.

The MUT has corresponded with the Ministry about the matter but no reply has been forthcoming. In view of this, the MUT has issued an ultimatum (25 November 219) to the Ministry to initiate discussions on the provision of insurance to educators.

If no commencement of discussions occurs by the said ultimatum, the union will be issuing industrial action.
