University of Malta graduation ceremonies which were meant to take place in November 2020 have officially been postponed.

Back in July the University of Malta said that it will try to find a solution so that the ceremonies can take place in November and December, after it had said that the ceremonies would be moved to February and March of next year.

The latest update regarding these ceremonies now states that they will not happen in November and December, but students will have to wait for a date which is deemed safe.

An email sent to all graduands by the University of Malta Rector Alfred J Vella, stated that due to the current pandemic the country is going through it has not been deemed safe to hold such an event with so many individuals in one indoor area.

"The current public health situation related to covid-19 presents several challenges to all of us. We are required to abide by the directions of the Public Health Authorities which stipulate that not more than 100 persons can congregate in an indoor venue for events such as Graduation Ceremonies," the email read.

The rector further explained "considering that 3500 graduands are involved and in order to keep the number of ceremonies manageable (about 39 in number), the only way in which these could have been held was to exclude family and friends from physically attending the events."

The email confirmed that the graduation ceremonies will eventually be held but due to the situation this will not be possible anytime soon.

In a statement, the University said that  all graduands will be issued with their degree or diploma scroll dated 20 November 2020.

Whilst congratulating all graduands on their achievement, University Rector, Prof Alfred J Vella, augured that the University will eventually be in a position to host the ceremonies in a special and memorable way that such an event deserves.
