Jesmond Saliba nominated to be new Commissioner for VOs

Friday, 2 July 2021, 17:14 Last update: about 6 years ago

Jesmond Saliba is set to be nominated as the new Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations, replacing former forensic chief Anthony Abela Medici who resigned earlier this week.

Saliba’s nomination has to go through the Social Affairs Committee in Parliament before it can be confirmed.

In a statement, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Sports, Recreation, and Voluntary Organisations said that Saliba has worked in the public, private, and voluntary sector where he had, amongst other things, the responsibility of drafting policies and of establishing relations with social partners.

He has been involved in the voluntary sector for a number of years, through music, sport, and on a community level in Fgura as well.

He served in the Malta Volleyball Association, and has been a member of the board of directors of Dar tal-Providenza for a decade, while also being involved in Fondazzjoni Sebh and Save a Life.

Saliba replaces Anthony Abela Medici, who succeeded Kenneth Wain in the role in 2018.

MaltaToday reported earlier this week that Abela Medici had stepped down after the government forced him to withdraw a request to the National Audit Office to carry out an audit on some 1,900 voluntary organisations which had not submitted their returns for a number of years.

Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima, who is responsible for this field, denied the allegations.
