Discover the vivid world of Malta’s carnival at the Manoel this month

A new Toi Toi production at Teatru Manoel is set to explore the colourful origins of Karnival across the Maltese islands, as part of Festivals Malta's official carnival programme.

In a spectacle both children and adults will enjoy, Il-Karnival fil-Manoel... Kuluri u Fantasija (Carnival at the Manoel... Colours and Fantasy) takes the whole family on a thrilling journey through the vibrant sights, sounds and fascinating history of Malta's carnival and will even discover carnival celebrations from around the world.

The show is the first of its kind to bring the history of carnival to the national theatre stage. Written and directed by carnival enthusiast Brian Bonnici, it features young artists from the Toi Toi Collective, namely Sarah Amato, Charlotte Formosa and Bertha Farrugia alongside guest artist Jeremy Grech, as they share the joy of Il-Karnival through drama, dance, projections, games and singing.

"We are delighted to present the first Teatru Manoel production to focus on one of Malta's most beloved traditions: Il-Karnival," says Teatru Manoel CEO Massimo Zammit. "This unmissable and fully immersive show is truly a spectacle that everyone in the family will love, packed with interesting facts and opportunities to join in - even on stage!"

In Il-Karnival fil-Manoel... Kuluri u Fantasija, the stellar cast welcomes audiences to the Manoel - a theatre that also played an important role in traditional celebrations with its Carnival Ball. As the carnival adventure continues, several characters help tell the story including the famed Grandmaster Manoel de Vilhena and Perlinu, the popular puppet who comes to life. Breath-taking costumes from dance and costume carnival competitions in recent years will complete the unforgettable experience for young and old.

Il-Karnival fil-Manoel... Kuluri u Fantasija will take place on 27 February at 11am and 4pm, 28 February at 3pm and 1 March at 11am. Events at Teatru Manoel adhere to all current Covid-19 guidelines. Audience members must remain masked.
