Monday, 4 April 2022, 19:04 Last update: about 3 years ago

The Wheelchair Basketball Schools Programme, Swish, is designed to educate teachers and students about the sport of wheelchair basketball and encourage youth, with or without a disability, to be physically active. The inclusive program generates awareness for parasport and promotes positive attitudinal change toward disability.

Recently, the Maltese Olympic Committee lent its support to the Wheelchair Basketball initiative in Maltese schools which is being organised by the Ministry for Education Centre for Sport and Physical Education in collaboration with Aġenzija Żgħazagħ.

The initiative has been welcomed by several governmental, church and private schools who have accepted the invitation to take part in programme, which is being led by coaches provided by the Maltese Olympic Committee.

"Wheelchair basketball is fast becoming the perfect team sport for inclusive physical education in schools, by allowing play by students of mixed abilities. Wheelchair basketball delivers as both a team sport and an incredible spectator experience since games are fast , requiring speed and skill to be delivered in abundance" remarked Kevin Azzopardi, Secretary General, Maltese Olympic Committee.

The Maltese Olympic Committee's support to Wheelchair Basketball has been well documented. In recent years, through the MOC's Sports for All Initiative it donated five wheelchairs as part of its contribution towards efforts to increase inclusion in sport.
